<b>Preliminaries:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
1. Go to <a href="http://support.brother.com/g/b/index.aspx">Brother Support Page</a><br />
<br />
2. Find your printer's support page for linux (Brother has excellent support for linux)<br />
<br />
For example, the network printer for me was <a href="http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=hk&lang=en&prod=hl5470dw_us_eu_as&os=128">HL-5470DW</a>.<br />
<br />
3. Download all the downloadables (3 in this case).<br />
<br />
<b>Installation:</b><br />
<br />
4. Extract the Driver Install Tool. (Open a terminal, go to the Downloads directory and type the following)<br />
$ gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz<br />
<br />
5. Run the script.<br />
$ bash linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-* Brother machine name<br />
'Brother machine name' in my case was hl5470dw.<br />
<br />
6. When you see the message "Will you specify the DeviceURI ?",<br />
For USB Users: Choose N(No)<br />
For Network Users: Choose Y(Yes) and Device URI.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WfnaoDfLeKE/U2sLvG2xieI/AAAAAAAAE1M/gqHWwP3tBI8/s1600/Screenshot+from+2014-05-08+12:44:28.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WfnaoDfLeKE/U2sLvG2xieI/AAAAAAAAE1M/gqHWwP3tBI8/s1600/Screenshot+from+2014-05-08+12:44:28.png" height="408" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Thats all. You can now see the printer in your print dialog box everywhere.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>

<div style="font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: r%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">GNUplot
is a versatile graphing and plotting tool which is more than
sufficient for all your graphing needs. Some of the impressive
features that I appreciate are:</span></div>
<ul>
<li><div style="background: transparent; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: r%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="background: transparent;">It provides great flexibility when you want a script to automate your
graphing. I had to run several hundred simulations and plot the data
for each and every one of them. Without GNUplot, i could not have
done it.</span></span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: transparent; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: r%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="background: transparent;">It
can produce graphs in many different formats (both in vector and
raster formats)</span></span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: transparent; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: r%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="background: transparent;">It
has nice curve-fitting tools</span></span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: transparent; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: r%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="background: transparent;">It
is free!</span></span></span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Here
is a very simple tutorial for beginners that should get you started.
If you are looking at something that has a more exhaustive coverage,
you can check this: </span><a href="http://people.duke.edu/~hpgavin/gnuplot.html">duke.edu GNUplot tutorial</a><span style="font-family: Arial;"> or go to official </span><a href="http://www.gnuplot.info/help.html" style="font-family: Arial;" target="_blank">GNUplot site</a><span style="font-family: Arial;"> for help.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">So,
lets get started.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: 13pt;">I
was introduced to Couchsurfing.org quite sometime back by one of my
friends. It sounded interesting, but I was not too keen to try it out
then. However, recently I have been really interested in going out
and exploring the possibilities. I decided to join in a group of
people to hike Gunung Panti mountain in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The
hike was organised by Philip from couchsurfing. Philip is a Filipino
and is a regular hiker and had hiked Gunung panti 8 times before. The
group seemed large, with 25 people in it. I made a choice based on my
gut instinct and joined them on the hike last Sunday.</span></div>

i was finding it difficult to sleep early so that I can get up at 5 AM on the

Kota Tinggi (one way 4.80 MYR). In the bus, I chatted with Antony, a
french tele-marketer and hitch-hiker who loves to travel and had
studied Film and Drama. He was an affable guy and i was amazed when
he started talking about Bollywood movies and then Rajinikant :)
Apparently, his mom works in Chennai and he had </span><span style="font-size: 17px;">traveled</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;"> India

his friend Bruce. Philip was heading the group while Bruce formed the tail.
Everything was being handled very professionally and that was the best part.

<span style="font-size: 13pt;">At
513m, Gunung panti is not the tallest of mountains. But it was a good
introduction for me. At first, i though half a kilometer should be
easy, but when you consider vertical climbing and natural obstacles
ahead of you, those 500 meters stretched towards more than a
kilometer. We took 5 minutes break at regular intervals and kept us
hydrated and well fed. I had bought energy bars for easy
replenishment. After around 2 hours of hiking, we reached a 90 degree
steep wall of rock. By this time, it had started raining and it was
getting cold. The forest cover was so thick that even though it was
raining quite well, the downpour did not affect us as we felt only a
slight drizzle. The wall of rock was daunting for many of us,
especially after 2 hours of continuous hiking and considering that
most of us were novice. </span>

fun as it was clearly a unique and refresing experience for me.
However, I would not recommend anybody to go there on their own as it
is very difficult to find the right way up and down the mountain.
There are many trails and if you are not familiar, there is a very
high chance of getting lost. But if you find a good opportunity, I
would say go ahead and enjoy yourself.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you are working on a big project
with large directories containing several source files, then there is
a good chance that you might need multiple files to be open at the
same time. And if you use vim editor or rely more on terminal (CLI)
in a linux environment to accomplish your work, then you definitely
would have felt the need to manage the multiple terminal windows that
lay scattered around all over the desktop. I tried other options like
terminator etc., but my friend recently introduced me to Byobu, and I
find it to be the best and straightforward option to manage multiple
terminal windows.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To install Byobu:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<pre class="brush: csharp">// Install byobu
% sudo apt-get install byobu

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To use it:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Open a terminal window (Cntl+Alt+t)</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">And, now use the following key-bindings
to create new terminal window panes and navigate between them.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Hi everyone, so I am
back on the blog after quite a long time. This time, I will share my first ever
experience as a tourist in a foreign land (Cambodia). It’s been over a year for
me in Singapore, but I came here as a student. All this while, I had some very
nice experiences, but could never find time to write about them. But this one
is special and I must document it. This should also help other prospective
travelers to Angkor Wat, Cambodia.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yIERe9gU5as/Um_kdETkE5I/AAAAAAAAEUY/NO94FeLtK-U/s1600/IMAG0767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="361" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yIERe9gU5as/Um_kdETkE5I/AAAAAAAAEUY/NO94FeLtK-U/s1600/IMAG0767.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Angkor Wat</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">So, I planned this trip
at very short notice. I had no group at first, but wanted some company as I
lack experience as a lone ranger. I managed to get 3 of my friends on board at
first, but 2 of them could not manage to stick around. Finally, I and Sumedh
(my senior at NTU) went on with the trip. We flew Tiger Airways from Singapore
on 27th October (Sunday) and reached Phnom Penh at 12:30 PM local time. The
flight was short and easy. Since the trip was only 2 days long (we had to
return on Tuesday morning), our main purpose was to visit the great Angkor Wat
temple. To be honest, I had no clue about anything else in Cambodia. This is
not a good practice and I recommend that you know quite a bit about a place
before you pack your bags.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> We reached Phnom
Penh on time and had to go to Siem Reap, where the Angkor region is located. It
is some 300 km from the capital and is a long journey by bus. This was the trickiest
part of the travel. You first have to go to a bus station from the airport
and get on a bus to Siem Reap. We shared a Tuktuk (a rickshaw) with 2 other
French girls whom we met at the Airport and it cost $2 each. I suggest booking
online with a good bus company (like Giant Ibis etc.) or else you would end up
like us as we boarded a bus that charged us $11 and stopped every other corner
to get more passengers on board than the seating can accommodate to make more
money for the driver. This stretched a typical 6 hour by-road journey into an
unbearable 8.5 hours. This not only sucked the juice out of us but also left
very little time for me and my friend to get some rest before we start out for
Angkor Wat to witness the sunrise the next day. The only relief was that it was
air-conditioned. We reached Siem Reap at around 11:30 PM. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hyIq2xCIRpU/Um_kpGmlWMI/AAAAAAAAEUg/HfkMyEgrqtI/s1600/IMAG0744.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hyIq2xCIRpU/Um_kpGmlWMI/AAAAAAAAEUg/HfkMyEgrqtI/s1600/IMAG0744.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Jam-packed bus ride to Siem Reap</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">This was also my first
ever experience as a <a href="https://www.couchsurfing.org/">couch surfer</a>. I stayed with a fellow named Chris Baudrez
from Belgium. He and his Cambodian wife were very kind people and they hosted
us at their house in Siem Reap. Chris was kind enough to give us bath-attached
room and also stayed up till midnight as we got really late to come in, thanks
to the horrible bus ride. He also helped in getting us the return bus tickets
and suggested a good vegetarian café (</span><a href="http://www.peacecafeangkor.org/" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: black; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">http://www.peacecafeangkor.org/</span></a><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">)
as I am a vegetarian.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">All the ragging from the
bus ride faded away as we left Chris’ place at around 4:45 AM to witness Angkor
Wat in all its glory in the sunrise. We hired a Tuktuk for a day for $15 which
would take us to all the temples and other interesting sites around it. Make
sure that you understand that a day could mean up to 4 PM in the evening and
any extension could mean that the Tuktuk driver could charge you more. So, make
that clear as you set out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">At around 5 AM, we got
our Angkor visit Pass for $20 and reached the Angkor Wat campus in another 5
minutes. We bought a guide book for $13, and we fell for it as you can buy the
same thing for $1 if you go inside the campus and bargain a little. Yes,
bargaining can bring the prices down drastically! Coming back to the sunrise at
Angkor Wat, I will let the photos speak for themselves.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sunrise at Angkor Wat</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">The temples in Angkor
region are centuries old (mostly built around the 9th to 15th
century) and were built by Hindu kings of the Khmer Empire. They are mostly built
from rock and are magnificent to say the least. The most impressive ones are
Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. The four walls of the Angkor Wat are decorated with
carvings depicting the epics (Mahabharata, Ramayana and other mythological
stories like the Samudramanthan, etc.) and events from the Khmer reign. There
are numerous statues of Buddha but most of them are headless as a result of
rampant loots and vandalism during the 70s and 80s, which is really sad. India
also houses many such temples and statues, but they still survive because of
the surviving Hindu religion and its ardent following. The western entrance
houses a statue of eight-armed Lord Vishnu which was a great sight, but then
again it was devoid of the weapons that Lord Vishnu carries in those arms. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">From there, we went on
to visit Angkor Thom, Baphuon, Bayon, Bantey Kdei, Phnom Bakheng and other
archeological sites in the region. We made it a point not to miss out on
anything and climbed atop every possible temple that had access. It was an
amazing experience, as if you are now playing Tomb Raider </span><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 13.5pt;">J</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">. The entire region is
covered by greenery and the lush green textures along with the glorious temples
made it an amazing visual treat. The temples at Angkor Thom, especially the
faces on the Prasat Bayon were really able to capture my imagination. Out of
the original 49 face-towers, 37 still stand the tests of time at this grand
spectacle. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Regarding the food, I
would suggest to be sure if you really want to experiment with local food. I
could not get along with it and I started feeling uneasy after the late lunch
from near the Terrace of the Leper King. However, my friend who stuck to bread
and butter for breakfast as well lunch had no problem at all. So, I recommend going light with the food during the
tour and eat heavier only if you trust the outlet. For vegetarians, I will
wholeheartedly recommend the <a href="http://www.peacecafeangkor.org/">Peace Café</a> which is in the city. It has a nice
ambience and really good service. You can also buy handcrafted articles from
the Fair-trade shop here. I recommend trying out the Lime and Honey Tea as it
was not only really good, but also helped me calm down my uneasiness (read
headache and acidity). <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Also, if you are keen on
trying the hot air balloon, make it a point to visit it right after your Angkor
Wat visit as it is nearby and they can close down by 4 PM. The Siem Reap town
is also a nice place to hang out in the evening, but be cautious if you are
travelling alone. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">By around 7:30 PM, we
returned back to Chris’ place and took some rest after an exciting day. The bus
was at midnight and Chris arranged for the tickets for us. He has some great
plans to start his own Tour operations in Cambodia and is planning to attend
the Tourism Conference at Brussels next year to pitch his business plans. He
showed us his website which is still under progress and we were really
impressed. He has a very good understanding about the tourism scene in Cambodia
and has a good plan in place. I pray for him and wish him all the best in his
endeavors. All in all, my first experience as a couch surfer was an excellent
one.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Penh was one of the best bus rides I have ever had. It cost us $12 and got us
back to Phnom Penh by 6:30 AM (six hours). Unfortunately, I can’t remember the
name of the bus company but will try to update if I can recall. From the bus
station in Phnom Penh, we took another Tuktuk to the airport and boarded the
return flight to Singapore. The entire journey back was very smooth and
comfortable. If you plan it right, you can wrap up the trip well below USD 200
(inclusive of 2 way tickets from Singapore) as I was able to get the flight
tickets for SGD 117 (including travel insurance but no check-in luggage).</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As NTU mail is hosted on Window Live (Hotmail), I was having this problem when I tried opening my mails in Ubuntu. This seems to be some compatibility problem where Windows Live refuses to recognize operating systems other than Microsoft Windows. However, the good news is that there is a way around this. Install the Firefox add-on called '<span style="background-color: #f7f6f5;">User Agent Switcher'. This will allow Firefox to mimic as if it is running on Windows and hence solves the problem.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: #f7f6f5; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: #f7f6f5; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> The same works for Google Chrome as well. Install the extension called 'User-agent switcher'. Once installed, it will sit right next to the address bar. Click on it and choose 'Chrome on Windows' and it should work just fine.</span><br />

To my surprise, using Ubuntu Software Center to install Dropbox didn't workout. So, I was looking out for alternatives. I tried many options from Ubuntu forums which included command line options, but none worked. Finally, I reverted back to Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) and it was the easiest and also worked like a breeze. Here are the steps:<br />
(Note: If you don't have SPM, you can esily install it from Ubuntu Software Center.)<br />
<br />
1. Open SPM and type 'dropbox' in the search box and mark the first option for installation.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HUBRNctIUGs/UOvGpLd8_7I/AAAAAAAACc4/-BkgNBxSwdU/s1600/s1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HUBRNctIUGs/UOvGpLd8_7I/AAAAAAAACc4/-BkgNBxSwdU/s640/s1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">2. When prompted with the screen shown below, click Next</span></div>

This is what you need to do share files between your Windows and Linux running on VMware without switching back and forth every time you need to access one of your files in the Windows desktop while working in a virtual machine.<br />
<br />
1. Go to VMware>> Virtual Machine>> Virtual Machine Settings...>> Options<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HHGd2biQIdU/UMYCXAtssVI/AAAAAAAABRE/yE0irHNIlZM/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HHGd2biQIdU/UMYCXAtssVI/AAAAAAAABRE/yE0irHNIlZM/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
2. Select "Shared Folders" and enable it. (its disabled by default)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0L9SFatdOuY/UMYCdoDQ03I/AAAAAAAABRM/SwwxwHp35Q0/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0L9SFatdOuY/UMYCdoDQ03I/AAAAAAAABRM/SwwxwHp35Q0/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Click on the "Add..." button and browse for the folder or drive you want to access from the Windows file-system.<br />
<br />
4. Click on "OK"<br />
<br />
And you are good to go.<br />
<br />
While inside the virtual machine, you can access your shared files under the File System>> mnt>> hgfs<br />
<br />
<b>Caution:</b> Do not access the same file in both Windows and the virtual machine at the same time as it could result in unpredictable behavior. It is not recommended to share without backing up.<br />
<br />
Have fun!</div>

Its a very nice website with eloquent explanation of all basic concepts in a very coherent manner. Its also very useful for newbies who are trying to self-learn c++. You would have to register with the site to make use of its features. The tutorials are under the "<a href="http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/">Documentation</a>" section.<br />

And a few months back, I had a short stint with the RedHat Linux for Cadence Virtuoso. But as I said, it was only a short stint. :)<br />
<br />
I thought I would document my step by step evolution and experiments with Linux and other softwares that I may use with it. To be frank, I am no expert and I would request readers to point out any mistakes or misconceptions that may creep in!<br />
<br />
I got Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) distro on VMware Player 4.0.4. I would suggest using VMware Player only if you have sufficient RAM on your PC. I assigned 4GB RAM for the virtual machine but I guess 2 GB is also good enough. Anything less than that may be give you less than desired performance.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-auWhk5AdWcI/UFP1f7Pt_kI/AAAAAAAAAS0/EnzdKn56PJs/s1600/vinux.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="323" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-auWhk5AdWcI/UFP1f7Pt_kI/AAAAAAAAAS0/EnzdKn56PJs/s400/vinux.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ubuntu 12.04 on VMware Player 4.04</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<a name='more'></a> If I had to install it on my laptop with 3 GB RAM, I would have had dual booted Linux with Windows. But since my lab PC has 8 GB RAM (yep, am lucky!) , I can afford the luxury of switching back and forth between Windows and Ubuntu using VMware, and by God, it works like a breeze!<br />
<br />
By the way, Ubuntu 12.04 is really a refreshing experience after years of Windows usage. The GUI is awesome and it has almost everything that you may need for your everyday computing needs plus much more. I would recommend everyone to give it a try just for fun. Who knows, you may also turn into an Ubuntu fan!<br />
<br />
You can get your free copy of VMware Player form <a href="https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0">here</a>. <br />
Get your free Ubuntu 12.04 image file from <a href="http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Steps to get you started:<br />
1. Download the Ubuntu 12.04 image file.<br />
2. Download and install VMware player, its very intuitive, you won't have much trouble. <br />
3. Run VMware Player by double-clicking its icon from desktop.<br />
4. Select the "Create a new virtual machine" option from the right-hand side pane in the VMware Player window. <br />
5. Choose Install from 'Installer disc image file (.iso)".<br />
6. Browse and load the previously downloaded image file of ubuntu 12.04.<br />
7. Assign required RAM and fill in other options. <br />
7. Wait for the installation to finish.<br />
<br />
Have fun! <br />

Wonder if you were also tempted by those card designs that adore the walls of OCBC FRANK branch at NTU, but settled for the free complimentary design due to budget restrictions. If that is the case, then there is good news.<br />
<br />
If you decide to credit your monthly pay into your new OCBC FRANK account, then you can choose a card design for your free ATM/debit card absolutely free of cost. This offer is valid only if you open a FRANK savings account before 31, October 2012. You can choose any card design (which they usually may charge upto S$ 20) except the ones in Designer Series.<br />

<br />
One thing to note is that sometimes the people at the branch may not be aware of this promotion. This happened to me. I had seen this promotion on the website but when I asked at the counter, they said that the promotion ended in August itself. But I called the customer service and they responded aptly and now I am going to get my favorite card design. Now thats being FRANK! :) <br />
<br />
So get ready to get your funky new ATM card and flaunt it among your friends. :)<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://adf.ly/BSci5" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="196" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t_WIBXqSXnM/UBCHdG_b4KI/AAAAAAAAAQw/_gS9WKeeLDY/s200/IamFrank.jpg" width="200" /></a></div> I thought of producing this post to help out those people out there who are really confused about which bank to go for to open a savings account. They feature attractive benefits like No initial deposit and no fall back fee (i.e. no minimum balance is needed to be maintained!). Being someone who has an account in both the schemes, I feel that I can give out some information based on my interaction with the Banks to help you out in making an informed decision.<br />
<br />
<span id="goog_1049723297"></span><span id="goog_1049723298"></span><br />
First of all, if you ask anybody in Singapore about their preferred bank, they will suggest DBS in unison. It is definitely the most preferred bank in Singapore with maximum number of ATMs island-wide.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jD4kCLztzE8/UBCHeftB_wI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/Iq12YxAOW5w/s1600/remix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jD4kCLztzE8/UBCHeftB_wI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/Iq12YxAOW5w/s1600/remix.jpg" /></a></div> However, OCBC is also pretty good and you can see an OCBC ATMs in almost all public places like malls, MRTs and in University campus. Considering the fact that DBS has maximum number of takers, you will often find large queues in front of DBS ATMs in public places while OCBC ATMs would be relatively less crowded. However, DBS gives you the freedom of using ATMs of both DBS as well as POSB. (DBS and POSB are one and the same)<br />
<br />
Next, if you see the interest rates offered by these two, OCBC clearly have an edge over DBS. DBS is offering 0.05% till the first S$ 2,50,000 and then it gets slightly better as the deposit goes up. Whereas OCBC FRANK accounts are offering 0.3% for the first S$ 10,000 and the rates get even better with increase in savings. But for a student who is supposedly not going to have much savings in the bank, the variations in interest rates is not a great concern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hBZk-ckln-4/UBCICeoSTvI/AAAAAAAAARI/nVS8XtAxQ-c/s1600/FRANK-Store-at-NTU-Store-Launch-Front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hBZk-ckln-4/UBCICeoSTvI/AAAAAAAAARI/nVS8XtAxQ-c/s200/FRANK-Store-at-NTU-Store-Launch-Front.jpg" width="200" /></a></div> Now, the next most important factor that all of us take into account is the accessibility. OCBC has a FRANK branch within the NTU University campus whereas DBS has a REMIX branch in NUS campus. Being an NTU student, I definitely would go for OCBC. DBS doesn't have a cash deposit machine on the NTU campus whereas OCBS do. However, you can find a DBS branch in the Jurong Point mall in Boon Lay, which is pretty close as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U_9Kn9T6pM4/UBCIPrhG4NI/AAAAAAAAARQ/bVqEQqIaBYM/s1600/Pic0787.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U_9Kn9T6pM4/UBCIPrhG4NI/AAAAAAAAARQ/bVqEQqIaBYM/s200/Pic0787.jpg" width="200" /></a></div> Another important point to note is that DBS will charge you a fee of S$ 2 if you perform any withdrawal over the bank branch within your daily ATM withdrawal limit (example: If you try to withdraw S$ 1000 from your account over the branch while your daily withdrawal limit is S$ 2000. You should use DBS ATM for such transactions to avoid being charged. OCBC has no such restrictions.<br />
<br />
Again, DBS has no fee whatsoever, annually or monthly. However, OCBC will charge you S$ 20 from the second year onwards as ATM fee. But this fee is waived if you spend atleast S$ 1800 using your ATM Debit card over the previous year. I think that should not be a problem as you would anyway spend more than S$ 2000 in a year anyway!<br />
<br />
One more important thing is the longevity of these benefits. These benefits (No initial deposit and no fall back fee) are applicable to all people below 26 years if you are in OCBC, while this limit is extended to 29 years in DBS. Also, the interest rates are subject to change as it is a promotional rate and the banks reserve rights to alter them later.<br />
<br />
Now, another fancy stuff that OCBC is providing to attract the youth, is a Designer card! You can pay a nominal fee and get an attractive design for your ATM Debit card to make different from others and add your own taste to it. They also give a trendy laptop sleeve upon a fresh account opening. But these are all sugar coating and should not bother you much.<br />
<br />

I understand that DBS has a collaboration with ICICI bank in India and thus is able to provide cheaper transaction rates to and from India. DBS also has a few branches in India (Chennai, Madurai, Trichy etc.) as well. But I am yet to ascertain on these details. I would request the readers to add to it if they have relevant information.<br />
<br />
Some of my friends who are doing Master's are also worried about the tuition fee loan. I must say that both OCBC and DBS are similar in this regard. Both are ready to issue upto 90% of tuition fee as loan at an interest rate of 4.75% which is payable only after your course completion. <br />
<br />
After going through all this, I believe now you are well informed enough to make the right choice. In fact, I was totally confused and I opened an account in both the banks. Since opening an account and maintaining it does not incur you any costs, you can go for this option as well!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CG6YIofyb6s/T_ExKAjdbqI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/Y9BLjmoit70/s200/ear.jpg" width="142" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">I have used many headphones and the best among them is unarguably the one that came bundled with my Apple iPod! But I find it difficult to use them when I am traveling or during a gym session or jogging. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The white ear buds of an iPod would get dirty very quickly and the soft rubber lining around its edges would wear out due to constant friction along with the sweat generated during these activities. Once that lining is gone, it is almost impossible to neglect the kind of discomfort that it might cause. In other headphones, I have experienced that the sweat might even spoil the functionality of the ear piece!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zGsvkNGympU/T_ExVhJgekI/AAAAAAAAAPY/gQBpdgNoGmk/s200/pack.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">Finally I found <a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" target="_blank">Philips SHQ1000</a> Sports headphones that are specifically designed for this purpose. <a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" target="_blank">Philips SHQ1000</a> is has a standard gold plated 3.5 mm stereo jack and is made of water resistant material, ideal for your outdoor adventures. The headphones come with 3 pairs of interchangeable caps that are made of high quality soft antibacterial rubber and you can choose the one that makes you feels comfortable. This also protects the internals of the earpiece from damage due to humid conditions.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
<a name='more'></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">Another problem with many headphones is that they may jump out during an exercise or fail to stay in place during an outdoor activity. Philips SHQ1000 ear buds are specifically designed to cling on to your ears and they almost never pop out without your wish!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uapE_xwj42E/T_ExgirLC0I/AAAAAAAAAPg/mwU8vGW83_Q/s200/images.jpg" width="165" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">I bought the piece from<a href="http://amzn.to/NZpuan" target="_blank"> amazon.com</a> at Rs. 590 (around $13) and I think they are really good. The sound quality is really good and the volume level is also pretty good. However, you would not experience any significant bass effect. The packaging says that they provide bass boost, but I have not noticed anything noticeable. If you are looking for a headphone that would give you above par sound quality and depth in music, then this one is not for you. Also, I do not think that you can get one at this price tag. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The fit is really nice and would avoid any noise due to wind during a jog or cycle commute. The clip provided along with it is also very useful and you can manage them by clipping it on to your shirt. The headphones come with a generous length of 1.2 m and you can’t ask for more than that!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

However, you would find it difficult to roll the headphones into it and I hardly use them. Philips SHQ1000 stands apart for its durability and superb design. I have been using them for more than half an year and have no problems whatsoever till now. I would recommend this for anyone who has similar needs as mine and is okay with the minor issues like lack of bass. Btw, who would notice a bass effect during a workout or during a cycle commute!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><span style="color: olive;">KOBI-BHERIYA</span></strong></span><strong><span style="color: olive;"> :</span></strong></span><br />
I had to search Wikipedia for the origins of Bheriya because I was not very sure…it goes like this:<br />
“More than fifty thousand years ago, there was a kingdom by the name <em>Wolfano</em>, in which lived a highly evolved breed of Wolves who were powerful warriors and walked upright. Their king was a wolf named Wolfa who took fancy to a human girl, Rajkumari Survaiya. She was a princess of the human kingdom Konkani. Wolfa tricks the girl into matrimony, and they have a son, Kobi.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vXzReRmXWGQ/TQ3wj0LCwjI/AAAAAAAAAGs/PxUDg4EbXaw/s1600/KOBI+AUR+BHERIYA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vXzReRmXWGQ/TQ3wj0LCwjI/AAAAAAAAAGs/PxUDg4EbXaw/s320/KOBI+AUR+BHERIYA.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_317" style="width: 280px;"></div>Eventually, Survaiya sees through the trick and leaves Wolfa and Cobi to marry another King of Moraghah. King Konkan of Konkani tricks and destroys the wolf kingdom of Wulfano,but guru Bhatiki-the main saviour and priest of wolfano saves Kobi from being killed and then he brings up Cobi and converts him into a fearsome warrior. When Kobi comes of age, he and his father go to claim her. Survaiya, in a rage at this audacity, curses Cobi and turns him into a gold statue.<br />
<br />
Fifty thousand years later the curse is lifted and Kobi finds himself in a jungle in Assam. He starts his new life with the name “Bheriya”. Bheriya is a towering figure with howling mane, twisting tail and glowing eyes. He protects his native forest with a passion, and the natives worshiped him as their wolf God.<br />
<br />
Bheriya finds a master, Bhatiki, who teaches him how to fight. Bhatiki splits Bheriya into “Kobi” and “Bheriya”. Bhatiki did this in order to send Kobi to Wolfano. But bhatiki fails to do so,mean while Kobi the wolf or animal part of Bheriya marries Jane and is unable to leave the jungle. For 10 years Cobi resided in the jungles of Assam, protecting the residents from many dangers.<br />
<span style="color: olive;"><br />
<b>SUPER POWERS:</b></span><br />
<strong> </strong><strong>Kobi</strong> could lengthen his tail to any desired length at wish and use it as a potent weapon or aid. In times of extreme crises he invokes wolf Gods and a fearsome mace materializes in his hand to smash the enemy. When in need Kobi can also call for help of an army of millions of wolves. These wolves consider him as their god and worship him.<br />
<br />
<strong> </strong><br />
<strong>Bheriya</strong> is a fearsome warrior having inherited all the fighting skills from the original Kobi. Bheriya is also a master of many ancient tricks and fighting skills and many a times he has beaten Kobi too.<br />

<br />
As a student from a middle-class family, my immediate concerns are very disconnected from the many issues that have been raised in Satyamev Jayate till now. After four years of engineering studies, now a huge task is glaring on my face- repa<span class="text_exposed_show">ying the education loan that my parents took from a National bank for my education. <br />
<br />
In a nation where car and home loans are cheaper than an educational loan, I would request the SMJ team to take up this issue. I can assure you that you would be spell-bound by the magnitude of support that you would get for this as this a problem that directly affects the youth of India irrespective of the gender, caste or color.<br />
<br />
We should learn from a nation like Singapore which bases its development on the grounds of sound education. I am not very proud when I mention that I have received a full scholarship and S$ 2000 monthly stipend in a Singaporean National University for my PhD studies while I am yet to repay the huge interests that have piled up back here in my own country for an educational loan. Though I understand that India can't afford that much, but at least the Govt. should ensure an interest free moratorium period to encourage the students and their parents.<br />
<br />
This is despite the fact that the Govt. of India has directed the National banks to waive the interests during the moratorium period. But every time I have gone to my bank to inquire on this, the send me back with a bland answer: " We don't know, we have not been directed anything yet!" (It should be noted that this announcement filled the newspapers as early as in 2009). Check this PIB link: <a href="http://www.pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=52177" target="_blank">Press Information Bureau</a> . </span><br />
<br />
<span class="text_exposed_show">Lets hope for a better tomorrow, where we Indians work for our own India in an environment that is conducive for burden less education, so that we don't have to go abroad to get us a better future.</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13416083603834154047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2694432848589170092.post-50488321294535567522012-06-13T12:16:00.003+05:302012-06-13T12:22:11.477+05:30Checklist for International Travel- Done by a group of NTU students, who wrote, re-wrote and finally have this up here!<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Its a highly comprehensive list of items that you would like to pack your bags with. Although many things are optional, you can be sure that at least you won't miss out on anything if you follow this.<b><br />
</b><br />
<br />
<div style="color: orange;"><b>Clothes</b></div>• Three to Five pairs of jeans/Cargoes/Capris/pants<br />
• Five t-shirts<br />
• Three formal shirts ( for guys).<br />
• One or two formal skirts or pants ( for girls)<br />
• Ten sets of inner wear<br />
• Four sets of casual wear - for sports, night wear. Carry tracks, pyjamas etc. If you live on campus, you will practically live on these.<br />
• Hand kerchiefs<br />
• A light weight travel jacket (optional, need not be too thick nor heavy, it is not for cold climate)<br />
<br />
<b>Girls </b>- Salwars are fine to wear to college. Kurtas, Jeans, Leggings are mostly preferred. It is really hot here, so carry cottons. A saree can be bought, if you have space. Nice to have. Purely optional.<br />
<b>Guys</b> - Most of them lived on jeans, and t-shirts. Cargoes are great too. Formals only for interviews, in the end of course. If you plan to go to India in between - you can skip it.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The weather at Singapore never comes down below 20 degree celcius, so u do not need any warm clothing at all. Drop all that thermal wear and shawls:-) . Lecture theatres are really cold here. So get a light weight jacket and a shawl ( for girls)<br />
<br />
<div style="color: orange;"><b>Footwear</b></div>• One shoe pair (sport shoes recommended)<br />

<br />
I am happy to let you all know that I have been granted admit at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore for a PhD in the School of Computer Engineering. NTU is ranked the 26th best University in the QS International University rankings 2011. I can not thank enough for the support provided by my parents and especially my mentor Asst. Prof. Rajesh Kannan who was instrumental in all my achievements.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/limo/files/NTU.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="121" src="http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/limo/files/NTU.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Earlier, I applied for 3 other Universities as well and with God's grace I got admits in all of them. I applied in University of Eindhoven, Netherlands, University of Cincinnati, USA and TUMunich, Germany.<br />
<br />
I chose NTU as it was the best option for me. NTU is the best among the 4. I have been offered full scholarship and a monthly stipend of S$ 2000. I was particularly not very interested in USA for various reasons though I was offered Graduate Research Scolarship at Cincinnati. The next best option was the University of Eindhoven that I obtained through a program called ERASMUS IDEAS which is sponsored by the European Union. Its a Masters program in Embedded Systems and offers complete tuition fee waiver and a one-time round trip traveling expense and a monthly stipend of 1000 euros.<br />
<br />
I have a lot of people to thank for whatever I have had in my life so far. Especially my parents and my mentor for the extreme belief in me and my abilities. Then my friends, the PICInc. who have stood by my through all the good and bad times. All my teachers whose dedication has provided the base for me to grow and be bold enough to dream. And finally God, for answering my prayers.<br />
<br />

The cyber world has witnessed several dangerous attacks including the Stuxnet virus and it’s successor Duqu.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The most recent such attack is the Flame infection, in which the malware managed to disguise itself as a legitimate Windows software. It exploited a bug in Windows to obtain a fake certificate which allowed itself to</div><div style="text-align: justify;">authenticate that is was from Windows.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://rahulkrishnanblogs.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/sctf_website_header.jpg?w=580&h=143" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="97" src="https://rahulkrishnanblogs.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/sctf_website_header.jpg?w=580&h=143" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Indian websites too offer little or no resistance to such security intrusions. The Computer Emergency Response Team, India(Cert-In) has been tracking de-facements of Indian websites and more. Their report can be viewed<a href="http://tinyurl.com/cert-annual-report-2009" target="_blank"> here </a>. It’s really sad that with so much talent and skill, Indian websites are compromised frequently and nothing can be done to stand this wave of attacks on them.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">sCTF is a Capture the Flag style ethical hacking contest, a strategic war-game designed to mimic the real world security challenges. Software developers in India have little exposure to secure coding practices and the effects of not adopting such practices-one of the main reasons why systems are compromised quite easily. Following such simple practices can help prevent such incidents. sCTF is focused exclusively on the student community. No prior exposure or experience in cyber security needed to participate. There are 3 rounds in the contest-the first rounds provide some necessary skills required to perform in the subsequent two rounds.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">sCTF is being organized along with the 1st International Conference on Security of Internet of Things to be held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri from 17-19 August 2012. Teams who qualify to the final round are fully sponsored to attend the conference and the event on-site. This is a golden opportunity to interact with the best security researchers from around the world! </div><div style="text-align: justify;">What you need to do?</div><div style="text-align: justify;">1. Form a team (max five members from your college)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">2. Approach a faculty/mentor and request him/her to mentor your team</div><div style="text-align: justify;">3.
